Are you looking for something unique? These plants feature dark foliage or blooms that make striking accent plants or could be mixed and matched for deep colored garden.

Our favorite dark and unusual annual plants are Ipomea ‘After Midnight’ and Canna ‘Toucan Scarlet’. Both feature deep purplish foliage and fill different roles in the garden. Ipomea, commonly called Sweet Potato Vine, plants always produce fabulous foliage and Proven Winners Sweet Caroline Bewitched ‘After Midnight’ is no exception. Ipomea ‘After Midnight has deep purple black foliage and a trailing to mounding habit making it a great annual ground cover or spiller in containers. Proven Winners Canna (Dark Leaf) ‘Toucan Scarlet’ blooms with large red flowers accented by its purple-bronze leaves for a striking image. These annual beauties make great highlights in a garden or thrillers in containers.

Heuchera ‘Black Pearl’ and Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’ are two of our favorite dark and unusual perennials. We love Proven Winners Heuchera ‘Black Pearl’ for its distinctive dark black foliage that remains for year round visual interest. In midsummer, ‘Black Pearl’ displays tall spikes of tiny white and pink flowers. Heuchera can handle shade or sun and is salt tolerant making it an easy to care for perennial. Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’ has dark chocolate covered scalloped leaves that quickly spread to form a thick mat making it a great deer resistant ground cover. In addition to its evergreen foliage ‘Chocolate Chip’ produces spikes of blue flowers in late spring to early summer.

Proven Winners Weigela ‘Spilled Wine’ is a deer resistant shrub with deep purple foliage. Its deep foliage is accented with tons of pink flowers in the spring for a stunning display. This fabulous shrub has a wider than tall habit making it a great edging plant or option for underneath windows.
