Vermiculite is a mineral (hydrated magnesium iron aluminum silicate) that was heated up in a purpose-built a commercial furnace, this caused it to expand. It is good for is aerating, moisture-retentive, nutrient-retentive, lightweight, non-toxic, sterile, does not rot or mold, and has a neutral PH (this is considered organic).
