How to make an early spring planter

We made this bright cheery wooden barrel planter with fun early spring perennials and annuals. Planting perennials in your planters allows for cold hardy containers that when the timing is right can be planted directly in your perennial landscaping. Then add warmer summer annuals to the planter to allow for season-long color.

Watch for early spring frost, freeze or just plain cold nightly weather. If you have an early itch to plant flowers, start with containers on a protected porch or that could easily be moved in.
